Hi! It is really cool that you have a profile here on “Burda”. I was told you went to school at Massart in MA and I just graduated from there. I was happy to know that a person as talented as you went to the same school as I did. It is also super cool that you actually answer people`s comments here. You are a gorgeous looking person and also a beautiful soul! I love your creations and I pray you have plenty of success always!!!

Hi thanks for your help, I have a few cute sewing accesories patterns that I have made and would like to share with everyone… I was wondering how I would go about doing this. Also, can you add projects to a list somehow, eg I wanted to make that tailored jacket on the homepage and I wanted to have it in a place that I could easily find it in the furture. Speaking of the tailored jacket I appreciate your idea about the interfacing on the shoulders in place of the shoulder pads :) last but not least can I share my knitting patterns on this site or is it just a sewing site? lol

Hi I am a newbie to this site and I have been looking for someone to help me work out how to use it properly. I see that you were on Project Runway and I couldn’t believe it haha. It is my FAVOURITE programme and I would love to talk to you about it. Also I thought that if you don’t mind… could you please be my mentour so I can find my feet :) Thanks Kelsey.

No I haven’t seen it, looks great. Have you seen Dream of Life? Heard it is good but haven’t seen it either. Patti Smith was reading an abridged version of her book ‘Just Kids’ on the radio last month retelling her relationship with Robert Mappelthorpe. Yeah great, looking forward to reading the blog! Oh by the way, just for info and if it is of any interest for your blogs. Don’t know about the US, but there is a big Grace Kelly’s style mediatic ‘craze’ going on at the moment in London. An exhibition of her dresses at the V&A (going on for quite a while) and a season at the National Film Theatre in June. Keep well

Hello Alison Re- the last discussion: Patti & Ann Demeeulemeester, a great style pairing indeed! A sequel of ‘Le Smocking blog’ in regard to the matter would be great! Keep well!

That would be great, they are both so elusive and there’s not too much online in terms of their collaboration unless you dig deep! I am working on it. Have you seen Black, White & Gray? Very cool.

Hi! I just discovered you and your projects (which are amazing by the way)! You were on project runway?!?!!?!?!?!?!? I just started getting into that show this season. How far did you get on the show?
God bless =)

Hi alison…i was wondering i saw that you did the vintage swimsuit last year made out of old tshirts (awesome by the way)..i thought i would try this..where do i find the instructions to that. I tried the foam website, but it doesnt show the instructions..i printed the instructions off of here for the original and the pattern. great idea… hope to make and wear it on earthday this year either as a suit or a bodysuit with a skirt. thanks :)
Apr 26, 2010, 07.37 PMby alisondahl
Hi there,
I hope I am not replying too late, but I think Earth Day has come and gone, but really, it’s every day right? The instructions for the t-shirt version and the original material version are exactly the same. The fabric layout is what changed: I just placed the top gathered section on one color t-shirt, the body pattern piece on another, and the strap piece on another!
I hope this helps you out regardless!
x alison

Hi Alison I just wanted to ask whether you could recommend any particular good pattern drafting books or good authors. There are soooo many books out there and I just want to buy a few books which I know have a good review from someone who is actually working in the industry. Have you posted recommended books on the blog before? maybe that would be cool to do- i’m sure others would appreciate your knowledge in this as well! bxx

That’s a great idea actually! I will prepare a post for this Thursday and have you to thank ;)

I imagine they would suit you very well!!! Just cut the pattern on remnants today (front cut on the bias and widdened to see how it drape)see how it goes. I see under your profile that you are ‘burdastyling’, which might suggest you have more influence on the pattern creation side of the job. Nice!

Hello Alison, I am thinking of posting some patterns for free download here at BurdaStyle. These patterns are made on my own, but allthough I am afraid of copyright problems, because I use the method of a special pattern school. What is legal to publish and what is forbidden? Do YOU know this???
Mar 10, 2010, 07.58 PMby alisondahl
Hi Immi,
I am going to try to find some more solid answers as I am not positive about these laws. But if you are making patterns from following instructions in a book, the final pattern is yours to do with it what you will, if there is no copyright on the patterns.
If you are using a commercial pattern you must check the copyright date: many patterns from the 50s and earlier are no longer under copyright and are free to copy. Others allow you to make 1 garment / pattern.
In Fashion Design, a garment or pattern must be changed 10% in order for it to not be a “duplicate” or infringe on the copyright laws. 10% is not very much and can mean just simply changing the fabric- which is why we see so many knock-offs.
Mar 11, 2010, 05.21 AMby immi.
Thank you so much for your attention!! :-)
I don’ t want to use any commercial patterns.
I want to publish basic-patterns which are typical vintage… and I follow the instructions in a book only with a few alterations.

Oh I just realized who you are!! I am a huge fan of yours! I feel honored to communicate with you. I hope that your career is going well. I am still so upset about your losing desing on PR. Paper, really are you kidding me? and to boot yours was better than several who seemed to stay on the show because they were so wierd and would add to the drama Bravo like so much! Urgggg!

Hi there! Thank you so much, you’re so kind! I knew going into the show that things like that were bound to happen- I am just so grateful I made it as far as I did;) I’ve gotten many great opportunities from the show & still have my own line going strong so all is good.
I am so happy we have BurdaStyle for resources and for bringing back the art of sewing to all.
Take care

hey Alison! I always see your name around and read your stuff and only now I realised you are Alison Kelly…!
funny this all happened today, and here’s the story: I live in Brazil, and there is one tv channel that shows project runway. it’s always shown here MUCH time after it’s happened and they keep repeating all episodes for ever… and today I watched the episode Keith was sent home and you had to finish the garment together with Jeffrey… and I thought “oh, Alison, this one does some nice things”, and I wrote your name and looked for your stuff over the internet. and saw your post about the giveaway, and then AAAAAAAH, THIS is the SAME Alison. it’s funny, I’m way over here and the world is such a small place nowadays.
ok, not so interesting, but I saw a lot of you today.
anyways, I really like your things, all very delicate and well done, and your site is great and all. and you are DAMN gorgeous!

nice meeting you. ;)

Hello Alison, I can understand your reluctance regarding welt pockets. The first time I had to actually “cut into” $15.00yd wool (in 1970s that was a lot of cash) my hands shook so hard. They came out “OK” I have done better, but later. My worst welts were bound buttonholes which are small welt openings. They were not pretty. I misjudged the space; the openings which should not have been there, were 1/4 inch apart. Oops! Live and learn. Cordially, Nehmah
