Burda Style For people who sew

I was watching a Burberry fashion show and one of the models was wearing a long sleeved shirt which had draping in the torso. And then just today I was looking at the H&M website and saw a shirt very similar to the one in the Burberry show. So I went to my local H&M expecting to walk out with a $40 shirt and instead found out that there are no H&M stores in the US that carry the style.

The only place I can find anything like it is at Burberry, which sells it for around $500. Yeah, not going to happen.

Can anyone tell me how I’d start sewing a shirt with draping in the torso? Do I just take a stretch of fabric and sew darts in the top to create the draping? I really have no idea how to create the draping!

  That looks a lot like a cowl-neck to me. It might be that the whole front is draped, but do check out instructions on how to creat a cowl-neck to get an idea on how to create something similar. To make the whole front draped I’d rather gather the front in the side-seams and along the sleeves combined with a slight cowl than use darts. But if you look through the book (Modern Pattern Design, from 1942) you will be able to find instructions on how to create basically anything you like. It’s mailnly for womenswear, but the principles should be the same.

  Hi!! I agreed with Ichigogirl in the fact that looks like a cowl neck, and also in the fact that looks like the all front part has been draped. Now what I can see, is that is rather loose fitting. One simple way to do it, is: take the front pattern of a simple t-shirt, and do not make a curve on the neck, but leave a horizontal line from top shoulder to top shoulder. Now, look at the picture…..the neck hangs like making a V neck, so….take the tape and measure yourself from highest point of shoulder, to lowest point of desive finish V neck. Now, with scissors, cut the paper pattern from the midle of the neck line, to just before the end of the hem . Open up the neck line to the same measurent you took on your self……. I hope you understand me…..but that is just the way to do the basic cowl neck.
